Federal housing officials are trying to make it harder for landlords to deny potential renters because of their criminal history.
Last week, the Department of Housing and Urban Developments issued new guidelines to landlords, saying blanket bans against renters with criminal convictions violate the Fair Housing Act because they disproportionately affect minorities.
But it's still possible for property owners to disqualify candidates because they were convicted of a crime. HUD says landlords have to consider each case individually.
For more on the new guidelines and what exactly they mean for property owners and tenants, WOSU's Steve Brown spoke with Rebecca Vallas from the Center for American Progress, which studies housing obstacles.
