Authorities say a 3-year-old boy is in stable condition after accidentally shooting himself Thursday night inside his Columbus home.

Officials say the toddler was taken to Nationwide Children's Hospital with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. He was initially in critical condition but was upgraded to stable after surgery.

Police say his mother was in another part of the house when the shooting occurred and was possibly asleep.

Investigators didn't say who owned the gun. They planned to question the mother and had obtained a search warrant for the house.

No charges have been filed.
