Ohio State University said it will seek to end the annual Mirror Lake jump on campus following the death of a student at this year's event.
University leadership said it will work with the campus community to end the annual event, according to a statement from the university. Austin Singletary, a third-year student from Dayton, passed away following the jump, according to the university.
"In spite of significant efforts taken to make this event a safer one, this tragedy has occurred," the university said in a statement on its website. "We must come together and acknowledge that while this is a student-led tradition that has been passed down through the years, we cannot risk another tragedy. University leadership strongly agrees that we will work with our campus community to end this annual event."

“We are heartbroken over this horrible tragedy," said President Michael V. Drake in a statement. "We have tentatively identified the young man as a student and are in the process of reaching out to his family. During this difficult time, counseling services will be made available throughout the holiday weekend for those who seek support,”
Students jump into Mirror Lake each year as a sign of good luck during the week of the Ohio State-Michigan football game.
In recent years, the university has tried to regulate the event. This year students were required to obtain a wristband to gain entry to the fenced in Mirror Lake area, according to The Lantern.
Approximately 14,000 people participated in the event last year, according to The Lantern.
