Police say it's unclear why a man shot and killed three members of a family in Columbus and wounded a fourth.

A police department spokesman says officers responding to the scene on Monday shot the suspect, 50-year-old Barry Kirk, after a short chase. Kirk later died at a local hospital. He lived near the slain family.

The shooting happened around 5 p.m. at a home in the Hilltop section of the city.

Sgt. Rich Weiner identified the dead as 31-year-old John Anderson II, 30-year-old Christina Anderson and their son, 7-year-old Landon Anderson.

The family's 12-year-old daughter is hospitalized in critical condition. She wasn't identified.

Weiner says police don't know if the shootings resulted from a home invasion or whether the family knew Kirk.
