The latest independent poll says former Ohio governor Ted Strickland still leads U.S. Senator Rob Portman in the race for Portman's seat, but that lead is shrinking.
The survey of Ohio voters by Quinnipiac University says Strickland holds a 46-to-40 percent lead over Portman. That's down from the nine point lead Strickland had in the last Quinnipiac poll in April.
The poll says Portman holds a 49-to-24 percent lead over Democratic Cincinnati City Councilman P.G. Sittenfeld, who's also running for the seat.
The same poll says President Barack Obama has a negative approval rating in Ohio, with only 40 percent of Ohio voters approving of his job performance, and 56 percent disapproving.
The poll gives Ohio Governor John Kasich a 60 percent approval rating.
