Ten Ohio police academies will remain open despite low graduation rates.
The head of Ohio's police training commission says there are no plans to close any facilities despite a recommendation from a state task force to cull up to half of the state's 62 police academies.
The Northeast Ohio Media Group reports less than half of enrollees at those 10 low-performing academies ended up as law enforcement officers over the past three years.
Eastern Gateway Community College in Steubenville has had the lowest graduation rate in Ohio in that time period. Statistics from Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine's office show that fewer than 37 percent of students enrolled eventually graduated.
All 10 academies are open to anyone and usually follow minimum police training standards.
