Slain Toddler’s Mom Pleads Guilty To Charges

Cameron Beckford
City of Frederick, Maryland
Dainesha Stevens pleads guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the death of her son Cameron Beckford.

The mother of a 1-year-old Maryland boy found dead in central Ohio has pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and tampering with evidence.

Twenty-five-year-old Dainesha Stevens entered her plea Friday in Franklin County court under an agreement with prosecutors recommending a 12-year prison sentence.

Defense attorney Mark Collins says the child, Cameron Beckford, was primarily beaten by a male friend of Stevens’ and that Stevens is taking responsibility for her inaction. Collins says the man, who hasn’t been indicted, believed Cameron had demons and beat the toddler to get rid of them.

Columbus police found the body Dec. 31 in a backpack in a creek. The coroner said the boy had bruises on his lower back, kidneys and lungs, and bruises and scarring on his buttocks.

Stevens’ sentencing is July 23.
