A semi-truck hauling lawn fertilizer caused westbound lanes of I-70 on the city’s east side to close for several hours this morning.
Three lanes of I-70 westbound on the city’s east side re-opened around 1 p.m. One lane remained restricted between Miller-Kelton and Alum Creek exits at that time.
Columbus Police Sergeant Rich Weiner said a semi-truck from Nebraska spilled tons of lawn fertilizer onto the highway.
“During that transport a malfunction occurred on one of his gates to his haul and started dropping 10 tons of fertilizer.”
Weiner said the driver will be charged with dropping load onto the roadway. The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio could levy additional charges. It oversees semi-truck drivers.
The Ohio EPA reported there was no indication fertilizer got into the sewer system. Street sweepers are clearing the debris.
