Dispute Over Tobacco Money Goes to Court

An anti-smoking group wants to stop the state treasurer from putting $230 million of its funding in a job-creation program controlled by Governor Strickland and legislative leaders.

The Tobacco Use Prevention and Control Foundation, whose board is mostly appointed by the governor and the Legislature, filed a complaint about the matter today in Franklin County Common Pleas Court.

The group is seeking to block Treasurer Richard Cordray from liquidating its fund and putting the money in a special jobs fund within the state treasury.

Tuesday, the Legislature passed a bill authorizing the transfer and Strickland signed the measure into law.

Spokesman Keith Dailey says Strickland expects the foundation's lawsuit to fail.
