Concerts @ Ohio State presents performances by students and faculty of the School of Music at The Ohio State University, Sundays at 1:00 PM on Classical 101.
Over the years, the School of Music has presented concert retrospectives of music by Chopin, Liszt, Shostakovich and now Beethoven. The first three because of the greatness of their music and because of the spicy too true for words lifestyles lived by each of these gentlemen. They presented marvelous fodder for program notes, not to mention broadcasts. Of course, they played Beethoven because he's Beethoven.
This edition of Concerts @ Ohio State has as its center Beethoven's Kreuzer, the Violin sonata 9, opus. 47. We'll hear Steven Glaser, chair of the piano faculty, and a youthful mensch, and Leonid Polonsky, a Russian born papa and grandpapa-familias from the Columbus Symphony who has forgotten more than most of us will ever know about music and life. A performance of the Beethoven Violin sonata by these two artist-teachers will teach the rest of us to shut up and revel in Beethoven's music.
I've bracketed the Kreuzer with Leonard Bernstein's Simple Song (from Mass) plated by the OSU Trombone Ensemble, and the three piano prelu des by Gershiwn, trancribed and played by the OSU Clarinet Ensemble. Such ensmbles are always filled with boy-band swagger, a touch of one up (wo)man ship and great playing. Just try to get past Joe Duchi at less than your best!
