On the next Fretworks on Classical 101, American Guitarist Christopher Parkening teams up with the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields and Iona Brown for an arrangement of the Capriol Suite by English composer Peter Warlock.
This six-movement suite from 1926, originally for strings and then full orchestra, is based popular 16th century dance tunes. It makes a great fit, since music of the Renaissance was dominated by the sound of plucked string instruments.
Filippo Gragnini was an Italian guitarist and composer who became a virtuoso performer in his hometown of Livorno and had works published in Milan. He settled in Paris for the last ten years of his life, where he died in 1820.
There Gragnani met and studied with the more famous virtuoso guitarist Ferdinando Carulli, who had also settled in Paris, then the music capitol of the world, to perform and teach. Gragnani dedicated three of his guitar duets to Carulli, but I'll have the Guitar Trio in D in a performance by members of the Linares Quartet.
Bolivian guitarist Javier Calderon will play music with a flavor of the Baroque period from Mexican composer Manuel Ponce. Ponce wrote his Suite in the Style of Weiss for Andres Segovia, inspired by the 18th century German lutenist Silvius Leopold Weiss, who was a contemporary of Johan Sebastian Bach.
The Seven Popular Spanish Songs of Manuel de Falla were originally written for soprano and piano, but are popular in many arrangements. The one we'll hear on Fretworks is for violin and guitar and features the Duo Sonidos, consisting of violinist William Knuth and guitarist Adam Levin.
For good measure, guitarist Eliot Fisk will perform one his own transcriptions of a keyboard sonata of the 18th century by Domenico Scarlatti, an Italian composer from Naples who spent a major part of his life in Spain.
Join me for Fretworks for music of the classical guitar Saturday and Wednesday evenings at 7 on Classical 101.
