A scene with Clara from the orginal 'Nutcracker' of 1892.

To encourage the holiday mood on the next Fretworks, I'll have, an arrangement of selections from Peter Tchaikovsky's ballet The Nutcracker with guitarists John Stover and Jeff Wells.  Also, Giovanni De Chiaro will play Jules Styne and Leroy Anderson with Let it Snow and Sleigh Ride.

I'll also have an 18th century mandolin concerto by an Italian composer from Naples, Nicolo Conforto.  Ugo Orlandi is the soloist with the group I Solisti Aquilani led by Vittorio Antonellini.  A better-known concerto features guitarist John Williams and the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields with Kenneth Sillito from their mid-1980's  recording, for an arrangement of Johann Sebastian Bach's good-natured Violin concerto in E.

Guitarist Scott Tennant, one of the founding members of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, plays the English Suite by John Duarte.  This is an original work that draws on English folk melodies for its inspiration.

Join me for music of the classical guitar and mandolin on Fretworks, Saturday and Wednesday evenings at 7:00 PM on Classical 101.
