This week on Columbus in Concert, the principal strings of ProMusica Chamber Orchestra weave their magic in one of Central Ohio's favorite space...the Pontifical College Josephinum.
The St. Turibius Chapel, which was completed in 1931, is a beautiful space which is a perfect setting for the quintet of concertmaster Katie McLin, principal second violin Marjorie Bagley, principal viola Mary Harris, principal cello Marc Moskovitz, and principal double-bass John Pellegrino. The Handel-Halvorsen Passacaglia in G Minor, for Violin and Cello, a Boccherini String Quintet, and a Quintet by Antonin Dvorak are among the featured selections.
If you looked at the instrument combination and thought something seemed wrong, you are quite observant. The quintets in this program have a double bass, rather than a viola, added to what would be a traditional string quartet. It makes for a warm, rich sound that filled the Josephinum.
Be listening to Classical 101 on Sunday afternoon at one o'clock for this week's ProMusica Chamber Orchestra radio broadcast.
