Less is more on new recording
Orchestras have grown over the years, with composers writing music for larger and larger forces. Mahler and Wagner come immediately to mind. Leopold Stokowski turned the music of J.S. Bach (and many others) into massive works. What about when you go the other direction? Greg Anderson and Elizabeth Joy Roe have taken music from across a wide spectrum and reduced it to its essence on a recording called When Words Fade. The recording, from the Steinway & Sons label, includes three arrangements from the opera repertoire: Anderson & Roeâs Carmen Fantasy, an original piece based on familiar tunes from The Magic Flute called Papageno!, and a rendition of an aria from a little-known Vivaldi opera: âSento in seno châin pioggia di lagrimeâ? (âI feel within a rain of tearsâ?) from Il Giustino. I have included the Vivaldi below and eagerly await the recording.
