The God Particle: Higgs Boson and the Origins of Mass

11 am

Two years ago, a scientific discovery made headlines across the world. Scientists believed they had discovered a missing piece in the puzzle of particle physics: the Higgs Boson, or "God particle." Its discovery seems to answer questions about the origins of mass, or how stuff became...stuff. We’ll explain the science of the particle and what it means for our understanding of the universe.

Guests

  • Joe Incandela, professor of physics at University of California–Santa Barbara
  • Christopher S. Hill, professor in the department of physics at Ohio State University

Event Thursday, Oct 2 at 8 pm in 100 Independence Hall: Then There Was Mass — from the Higgs to the Unknown — renowned physicist Joseph Incandela presents the Smith Lecture. His 2012 announcement of a particle resembling the long-sought Higgs boson rocked the world. Book And, if you just can't get enough, and would like to learn more about the Large Hadron Collider - the device used to discover the Higgs Boson - check out "A Zeptospace Odyssey" by Gian Francesco Giudice.
