COLUMBUS, OHIO, APRIL 7, 2015 – The WOSU Public Media original documentary, Admiral Byrd: Forged on Ice will have its local broadcast premiere on Tuesday, April 21 at 9 p.m. on WOSU TV. The hour-long program examines the life of Richard E. Byrd, from his childhood in Virginia to the most extreme environments on earth.
In the last great period of global exploration, Admiral Byrd challenged the forces of nature to advance the cause of science and aviation. He made history when he became the first person to fly over the North Pole in 1926, and followed it up with a death-defying, trans-Atlantic crossing one year later.
In 1929, he made history again by becoming the first person to fly over the South Pole, and returned to the continent on a second expedition where he spent four harrowing months alone in the heart of Antarctica that almost claimed his life.
Admiral Byrd: Forged on Ice shows the legacy Byrd built through sheer will, ambition and perseverance, while looking ahead at the 21st century explorers and climatologists who carry on in his name.
