WOSU Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA)
Designing a diverse, equitable, inclusive and accessible workplace culture means creating and nurturing an environment where all employees, regardless of gender, race, age, education, ability, religion or sexual orientation feel valued, respected and able to succeed.
WOSU Public Media’s strategic plan, completed in 2020, has the mission “to engage, inform and inspire our diverse community.” Among the plan’s value statements: “Authenticity – Our internal environment aligns with our external commitment to collaboration, respect, openness, inclusion and creativity.”
WOSU recognizes that to achieve our mission and vision we must actively work to overcome complex inequities in our community, especially focusing on the issue of endemic racism. As a public media organization, WOSU plays an essential role in reporting and producing content that examines these critical issues, encourages thoughtful dialogue and interaction, and has the potential to prompt change.
To accomplish this work, WOSU must hold itself accountable, embracing transparency through regular reporting of our own initiatives to build a more diverse, equitable, inclusive and accessible organization.
In 2020, WOSU created the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA) team made up of volunteer members of the staff. The team develops recommendations toward advancing racial equity and other issues and advises senior staff and members of the Friends of WOSU Board on action steps. We are proud to work with a Board which is representative of the Central Ohio community.
Members of the DEIA Advisory Team include Casey Paris (Radio) serving as Chair, Cheryl Dring (Classical 101), Debbie Holmes (News), George Levert (TV), Leticia Wiggins (Digital) and senior director Mary Alice Akins (Business). The team is supported by WOSU Board Member and Raising the Bar Performance Group CEO, Courtnee Carrigan.
By embracing a diverse range of perspectives, we hope to produce a curriculum for all staff involvement and open dialogue about other important issues related to diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility at WOSU Public Media.
