Columbus State Community College on Tuesday announced plans to build a Career Development Center on the southeast side.

The center will be built on 37 acres near the intersection of Refugee Road and Winchester Pike. It will be geared toward people who want jobs in the construction trades or as first responders.

“Construction trades professionals and first responders are critical to the wellness and prosperity of our region, Columbus State President David Harrison said in a statement. "This new center will provide pathways to good jobs and strong careers for young people just starting out and for adults transitioning to new opportunities.”

Columbus State is in contract to buy the land from First Church of God for $2.2 million with bond proceeds Franklin County voters approved in March 2020.

The property must be rezoned.

The center will serve 2,600 students per year.

Programs will include architectural drafting, civil engineering technology, construction management, environmental science, GIS, HVAC technology, landscape design and management, facilities maintenance, welding, surveying, criminal justice, emergency medical services and fire science.

Columbus State announced its plan as the city continues to work on its Eastland Community Plan for the area.

Columbus State is still working on a construction timeline.
