A man was shot to death inside St. Ann’s Hospital in Westerville on Monday following a shootout with Columbus Police and the hospital’s security officers.
Two Columbus Police offers and four-armed St. Ann’s security guards fired multiple rounds, Columbus Police Sgt. James Fuqua said. Police are unsure if the man had a gun of his own or was able to get ahold of one of the officer's weapons.
The man was in the emergency room when the shooting started at 2:22 p.m., Westerville Police Chief Charles Chandler said.
The man was initially transported to St. Ann’s after Westerville Police found him passed out in a car. Police officers accompanied the man to the emergency room because he had domestic violence and weapons under disability warrants out for his arrest, Chandler said.
The man’s name has not been released.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation of the shooting.
No one else in the hospital was injured during the shooting. Chandler said St. Ann’s is safe and the hospital is continuing to treat patients.
This is a developing story and will be updated when more information becomes available.
