An Ohio Senate panel raised the speed limit to 75 on the Ohio Turnpike.

State senators have given the green light to a proposal to increase the speed limit to 75 mph for all motorists on the Ohio Turnpike and rural interstates.

The plan is part of a $7 billion, two-year transportation budget that passed the Senate on a unanimous vote Wednesday.

The proposed increase comes less than two years after Ohio allowed drivers to go 70 mph.

The Senate’s transportation committee changed the budget bill to let all vehicles – including trucks, buses and other larger vehicles – travel at 75 mph on certain roadways.

The panel’s chairwoman says truckers had said it would be safer if all motorists were traveling the same speed.

The Ohio House speaker has questioned whether it’s too soon to raise the speed limit again.
