WOSU Public Media was awarded two Emmys at the 45th Annual Midwestern Regional Emmy Awards ceremony held on July 25, 2009. Below is a list of the winners:

Ohio SPJ Award Winners

The WOSU News Team was awarded eight 2008 Ohio Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Awards. The competition honors print, online and broadcast journalists in Ohio who best served the public interest and promoted freedom in 2008.

Among the winners, the WOSU 820 AM News Team was awarded second place for Best News Operation. WOSU’s Tom Borgerding was awarded first place for Best Crime Reporting for his story “Reluctant Witness.” Borgerding was also awarded second place for Best Consumer Reporting for his story “Fuel, Food, Farms.” WOSU’s Mandie Trimble won first place for Best Minority Issues Coverage for her story “Columbus Abortion Clinics Near Predominately Black Neighborhoods: Numbers Increase Among Teens.” Trimble also won won second place for Best Feature Reporting for her story “Old-School Book Binder: Keeping the Trade Alive.” WOSU’s Christina Morgan was awarded second place for Best Enterprise Reporting for her story “Faces of Recession.” Morgan was also awarded second place for Best Environmental Reporting for her story “Cranberry Bog.” And last, WOSU was awarded second place for Best Television Public Affairs Program for Columbus on the Record.


WOSU Public Media has received a national My Source Community Impact Award for Engagement from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). WOSU was recognized for outreach efforts related to the digital television transition and creating a model for helping those at-risk that was unique in the country. WOSU launched a “Help Your Neighbor” program early in 2008 in order to solicit nearly 3,000 unused converter box coupons from the community. WOSU then secured 3,000 converter boxes and, partnering with the Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging, LifeCare Alliance, and a number of community volunteers, installed the boxes in the homes of at-risk seniors.

WOSU also made itself available through a series of call-in programs and by establishing a hotline to answer the community’s questions related to the digital conversion. The program and hotline was promoted through spots on WOSU TV and WOSU Radio. These calls also resulted in the deployment of WOSU teams to assist callers in hooking up their converter boxes.
