Ohio Ready To Learn Early Infant & Toddler Module Descriptions January through June 2008
Ohio's Ready to Learn Early is a state-funded program targeted to home-based care providers. Overview modules are 2.5-hours in length. Modules 2, 3 and 4 are 3-hours in length. Modules are provided by the Ohio Educational Television Stations through a grant from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. Workshops are free and pending approval for Step Up To Quality and IACET CEU Credit. ODJFS in-service forms will be provided to each participant. Infant & Toddler Module 1: Overview Explore Ohio’s Infant & Toddler Guidelines and its role in the lives of infants, toddlers, providers and parents. By exploring the Guidelines, participants will deepen their understanding of how children. The six developmental domains of young children will be reviewed and the impact routine care has on all developmental domains will be discussed. This is a prerequisite before attending any other infant and toddler modules. (CDA area 8)
Infant & Toddler Module 2: Physical Domain In order for optimal infant and toddler growth and development to occur, caregivers must provide “protective canopies” such as health and illness prevention, Using the Guidelines, participants will discuss how to help young children achieve optimal physical health while allowing children to explore and connect with the world around them. To be eligible to attend this module, participants must first attend module 1: overview. (CDA area 1)
Infant & Toddler Module 3: Emotional Domain New research shows how emotions are the key in organizing the experience and behavior of young children. Participants will further deepen their understanding of the emotional development of infants and toddlers and explore how this knowledge can translate into emotionally supportive care giving practices. To be eligible to attend this module, participants must first attend module 1: overview. (CDA area 3)
Infant & Toddler Module 4: Social Domain All learning happens in relationships. These interactions contribute to a child’s learning in all developmental areas. Participants will gain a better understanding of how the connection of infants and toddlers to adults and children around them shape their interactions, skills, and abilities. Care giving strategies to support social development will also be shared. To be eligible to attend this module, participants must first attend module 1: overview. (CDA area 3)
Infant Toddler Module 5—Motor Development Through lecture, video, group discussion, & small group activity, based upon Ohio’s Infant and Toddler Guidelines, participants will study typical, as well as variations in, small, large motor and oral motor development. Care giving strategies to enhance young children’s motor skills, exploration and learning through movement will be discussed. To be eligible to attend this module, participants must first attend Module 1: Overview. (CDA Area 2)
Infant Toddler Module 6—Language Infants and toddlers communicate to build relationships, share meaning with one another and express their needs. Acquisition of language is one of the most amazing developmental accomplishments during the first three years of life! Participants will examine the progression of language development and review techniques to support this development in infants and toddlers. Early Literacy development will also be discussed. To be eligible to attend this module, participants must first attend Module 1: Overview. (CDA Area 2)
Infant Toddler Module 7—Cognitive Development Through lecture, video, group discussion, & small group activity, based upon Ohio’s Infant & Toddler Guidelines, participants will examine cognitive development including the six Discoveries of Infancy. The Discoveries are Grouping/Categorizing, Cause & Effect, Problem Solving, Memory, Space, and Imitation. Care giving strategies to support cognitive development will also be discussed. To be eligible to attend this module, participants must first attend Module 1: Overview. (CDA Area 2)
