“Ramen (rah-muhn), noun:Â a Japanese noodle soup dish consisting of wheat noodles in a meat or fish-based broth, often flavored with soy sauce or miso, with toppings such as sliced pork, bean sprouts, bamboo shoots, and green onions.”
This is not your college roomie’s ramen! Jobu Ramen in Grandview offers real ramen, not the packaged version, and with some wonderful surprises!
Jobu Ramen is located in the old Mazza location on Grandview Avenue between Fifth and Third Avenues. Mazza moved two doors north. The small storefront space has an open kitchen and eating bar in the back, 30 seats inside, and a small patio outside.Â The plain-but-warm decor is dark wood.
Owner Michael Kopfman has done a fine job with the small menu featuring fresh tasting dishes.
We started with the outstanding special steam bun: Sapporo buttered tempura-style Lake Erie walleye with rice wine slaw, a nice sauce, and a bit of heat ($9). It was large enough to share as a first course or to be a lunch or light dinner entree, and one of my favorite dishes of the year!
My wife had the tasty cold noodle salad, poached chicken, vegetables, mango, avocado, almonds, fresh herbs and lightly spicy peanut sauce ($12). I enjoyed the chicken ramen, with fresh-tasting broth, noodles, roasted chicken, poached egg, scallions, shredded cabbage, and celery root, turnip, and rutabaga ($12). We ran into several friends, and everyone seemed very pleased with their food.
The small menu consists of two specials; four snacks, including the great looking Korean BBQ burrito and several steam buns ($6 – $9); two salads, kimchi and cold noodle ($10 – $12); four ramen ($10 – 13); and a two-item kids menu.
Jobu Ramen is a great choice for a healthy, low calorie, low fat lunch or dinner, but do not let all that healthy stuff deter you – the food is yummy.
