PBS and WGBH announced today that “Downton Abbey, Season 3” on MASTERPIECE CLASSIC rated second only to the Super Bowl on Sunday night. The drama has seen a strong audience all season; the average audience for Season 3’s first five episodes is 72% above the first five episodes of Season 2. Sunday night’s episode averaged 6.6 million viewers

Downton Abbey is now the top rated PBS drama ever. Look for a gathering at a local Columbus theatre for the Downton Abbey 90-minute finale on February 17th. We’ll be making an announcement soon!

This Sunday’s Downton Abbey episode is a stunner. The episode contains a plot development that caused much viewer reaction when it aired in the UK. The storyline centers on the pregnancy disorder, preeclampsia. Of course, Lady Sybil is pregnant and this episode deals with the birth of Sybil and Branson’s child. You will want to hear from Branson himself on Monday as WOSU joins in bringing to you an online chat with Allen Leech (Tom Branson) at 1 pm this Monday, January 28th. All you have to do is go to http://wosu.org/2012/television/downton-abbey-live-chat/ at 1 pm Monday and take part.

There were over 7.9 million viewers for the premiere of Downton Abbey on PBS stations across the country including WOSU. Good luck, impersonators. They are lining up at the commercial networks to try to take advantage of the Downton Abbey buzz by doing what they usually do, producing a dumbed down version with commercials every 14 minutes.

Its always been my thought that watching a show like Downton Abbey is similar to a movie theater experience as people get larger HDTV television sets and there are no commercials to interfere with the flow. No commercial station can match it. It was an actual theater experience last weekend as we gathered with about 600 of our friends to watch Downton’s first hour at the historic Southern Theatre. It was a communal experience as people laughed, booed and cheered together throughout the program. What fun!

We’re so pleased to see the New York Times and other coverage of this phenomenon. The Times article pointed out that the premiere program of season three measured 10 times as much conversation on Twitter as the only two higher-rated shows on Sunday. And if you ask around you will find that people old and young (including my 22-year old daughter) are hooked completely on Downton. If interested in a fun take on season three on Downton Abbey, you might want to read this blog from Lizzy Acker, a contributor at KQED in San Francisco. I like her writing! There are twists and turns ahead, so keep watching on Sunday nights at 9 pm on WOSU TV.

Downton Abbey has a run of seven new episodes for its third season on WOSU TV and PBS over the next several weeks – Sunday nights on Masterpiece at 9 pm. Even if you haven’t caught on yet to this compelling series, its not too late. It has some fervent supporters and viewers as was reflected on Saturday, Jan. 5th at the WOSU HIGH TEA and PREMIERE event at the Westin/Southern Theatre. We had 400 or a full house for the High Tea and another 200 fans joined us for the premiere. The Columbus Dispatch also featured Downton Abbey today — though they missed a great local angle with one of our most successful events. Tune in!

It’s perhaps the greatest compliment when someone steals your idea. And it’s become quite a tradition –the commercial TV networks watch for successes on PBS, swipe the concept, put a commercial overlay on the programming and market it with more money than the entire PBS marketing budget.

The latest case is the hiring by NBC of the creator of the highly successful Downton Abbey series on PBS. Julian Fellowes will be producing a new television drama called The Gilded Age set in the late 19th century in New York City. Wonder if some network execs have been watching the viewership numbers of Downton Abbey? This closely follows the CBS drama series Elementary, which is a commercial version of the Sherlock series airing on PBS. Sherlock is a modern adaptation of Sherlock Holmes and, not surprisingly, so is Elementary.

The historic list is extensive dating back to 1963, when educational television stations started airing tennis matches, well before we had “Breakfast at Wimbledon.” Then you have Julia Child’s The French Chef that inspired so many other cooking shows and a whole network. Antiques Roadshow, still the number one program on PBS stations, has certainly inspired several cable knockoff shows.

Of course, what PBS stations like WOSU have to offer is something the commercial networks cannot emulate – commercial free programming. I submit that watching Downton Abbey, like watching a movie at the local AMC Theatre, is a wholly different, more immersive, more satisfying experience, simply because there are not commercials every 14 minutes of programming (or whatever the ratio today). So enjoy continuing to watch PBS and know that the commercial television network programmers are watching too!

So I am at a gathering last Tuesday night and I’m approached nearly a dozen times by Downton Abbey viewers saying it was must see on WOSU TV and PBS. That is always great to hear! The British period drama concluded its second year on Sunday night with national ratings giving the Masterpiece Classic broadcast of the season finale 5.4 million viewers. Not only does that mark a nearly 30 percent increase from the 4.2-million-strong season premiere, it doesn’t even include DVR, online streaming or station replays. The finale marks PBS’ highest overnight rating in over two years, making it the strongest program for PBS since Ken Burns‘ National Parks premiered in Sept., 2009. Look for season three next year with a new American actress joining the cast – Shirley MacLaine (the American Mother of Lady Grantham). Taping starts at the Ealing Studios in west London next month for season three. Oh, and you really can’t help but fall for Lady Mary. See this Q and A from PBS on season two of Downton Abbey below:
