WOSU hits Capitol Hill as Sequestration hits all Public Media

I would just as soon we never had to learn the meaning of this new word in our vocabulary: Sequestration. But there it is, this unlucky 13 letter word that is dominating the news and impacts the fiscal health of all federally funded organizations including all of public broadcasting. At WOSU Public Media, we receive about 14% of our funding in the form of a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcast (CPB), a private, federally funded nonprofit corporation.

Now, it is pretty certain that the across the board federal cuts will reduce our federal grant anywhere from 5-8%. We need your help to continue the local and national programming you’ve come to expect from WOSU. Please consider a contribution to assist us over the next few months. You can do so online anytime and we invite you to contribute to support local programming next Monday night, March 4th, as WOSU TV presents the BEST OF COLUMBUS NEIGHBORHOODS – a special night reviewing excerpts from our six award winning documentaries. The photo above was from the Public Media Summit held last week in DC. Friend’s Board President Dale Heydlauff and I were able to visit with all three of our congressional delegation from central Ohio to explain the importance of federal support to the national and local programming efforts of WOSU. We thank Representatives Steve Stivers, Pat Tiberi and Joyce Beatty for their time and support.

Columbus Neighborhoods is Back!

Whether the election results went your way or another way, the robo-calls and negative political ads are gone! For that alone we should all celebrate. I hope you found WOSU TV and Radio a safe haven from those ads.

Our focus now turns back to the neighborhoods of Columbus the premiere of our sixth neighborhood documentary Columbus Neighborhoods – Olde Towne East. This is one of our city’s oldest streetcar neighborhoods and home to aristocrats, governors and captains of industry. Watch this new story of Columbus history next Monday night, November 12^th at 9 pm on WOSU TV.

Our goal with Columbus Neighborhoods is to tell the untold story of Columbus through our culturally and historically rich neighborhoods. Fascinating stories of Columbus continue to unfold every day and with your support, we’ll be there to bring them to life!

If you’ve missed any of WOSU’s major documentaries starring the city of Columbus, you can see them free on the big screen in brilliant Blu-Ray at AMC Easton 30 for the next two Saturday mornings – Nov. 3 and 10, starting at 10 am. Celebrate the different neighborhoods that make up our great city as the 2012 bicentennial year comes to a close. The WOSU staff celebrated two events on Friday with an assist from a generous contribution by Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams.

First, the announcement that WOSU was with winner of the Artistic Excellence Award from the Greater Columbus Arts Council for the remarkable Columbus Neighborhoods project, which includes documentaries, radio specials, an interactive website and video segments created just for central Ohio classrooms.

Second, the success of the Fall Fund Drive on 89.7 FM NPR News. We topped our $240,000 fund drive goal on Friday with contributions from over 2,200 listeners in central Ohio.

All of us are so privileged to work at WOSU and serve the citizens of this great community!

Two Emmy Awards for WOSU!

WOSU Public Media has received more Emmy awards for its Columbus Neighborhoods series and for ArtZine, a project that features local artists, events, and arts organizations. The awards were given over the weekend by the Ohio Valley Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. See more detail and also watch the videos that gained this great honor! We couldn’t do it without those organizations that support us. Artzine is a unique partnership between WOSU and the Greater Columbus Arts Council and the Columbus Neighborhoods project has had a number of supporters with major fiscal support from State Auto Insurance and JPMorgan Chase.

When visiting COSI, Turn right!

So, you are at COSI for an event or have kids running about and looking for an adult distraction. I suggest you “turn right” as you come into the COSI lobby. Even before you reach the famous COSI pendulum, if you take a right, you will see a working Firestone automobile that was manufactured here in Columbus in 1910. That is the entrance to the Columbus Historical Society exhibit, where you can spend many minutes perusing the exhibit, testing your local historical knowledge and watching one of WOSU’s Columbus Neighborhoods documentaries! Now if you make it to the pendulum and take a right, you will see down the hall our WOSU@COSI studios. Come on down for a visit to our popular interactive exhibit, developed collaboratively with COSI. By taking these two rights, you can’t go wrong.

WOSU honored with Lucas Sullivant Award

Columbus celebrated its 200th birthday with a pretty nice party last Friday night that was especially noteworthy for WOSU. We were honored by the Columbus Historical Society with the Lucas Sullivant Gift Award, recognizing our Columbus Neighborhoods documentary series and our focus on preserving and understanding our community history and culture. Lucas Sullivant, of course, was the founder of Franklinton and Columbus. See more about Mr. Sullivant in our documentary this Tuesday night at 8 p.m. on WOSU TV.
