9/11 America Remembers: Special Programming from WOSU
Most of the broadcast and cable networks will be remembering back 10 years ago this weekend. Everyone has a story about that day. Unfortunately, it seems the tragic days are the ones that we can recall instantly. One of my clear memories of youth was the day President Kennedy was killed. Our 2nd grade recess was cut short and we were told to go directly into the nearby Catholic church to pray.
My story on 9/11/01 starts early with a 6 am phone call from my wife’s brother to report the birth of their first child. He lives near Amsterdam in Holland and we were so happy for him! I was driving to my job at the public television and radio center at University of Alabama College of Communication when NPR broke in with some first reports. I entered our lobby and several staff had gathered to watch the TV reports. Within a few minutes, the lobby was filled with students, faculty, and staff, some crying and others in shock. We had one of the few TVs in the building. The other memory I have of that day was picking up my 10 and 8 year old girls and trying to explain what had happened. My youngest saying simply, “why would someone do that?”
WOSU TV and Radio will be spending the weekend giving perspective to this tragedy – ten years later.
