The Chinese New Year, also referred to as the Lunar New Year, is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. It will be celebrated this year on Sunday, February 10th and if you’re in China, the celebration will last until the 15th of the month.

For those of you into Chinese astrology, this is the year of the snake. Most people just want to know if that means it will be a good year or bad year. The Chinese convert each animal in astrology into one of the five elements of the Earth. The snake contains mainly fire and the year 2013 is water. Therefore creating opposite elements meaning a mix of good and bad fortune. So a normal year for most folks.

If you’re interested in learning more about the Chinese culture “Land of the Dragon” airing on this week’s Sunday Showcase is just the ticket. Beautifully shot and edited this series, filmed on location in China, sheds light on the lives, struggles, and cultures of the country’s 56 ethnic groups. The program is geared toward giving the American audience a deeper, more balanced understanding of who the Chinese people are, what they value, how they live, and where they are headed. “Land of the Dragon” will take you on a journey of food, architecture, medicine, costumes and traditional culture. So wear a little red for luck, order a feast and join us Sunday afternoon for “Land of the Dragon”.

“Land of the Dragon” airs Sunday, February 10 beginning at 3:00pm on WOSU TV.
