Silent Night on Friday Night Arts
I’m not one for the opera but this coming Friday on PBS Arts I have to recommend a wonderful production from the Minnesota Opera Company, SILENT NIGHT. The Pulitzer Prize winning opera from composer Kevin Puts is based on the French film Joyeux Nöel, which tells the true story of a surprise cease-fire among German, French and Scottish soldiers in a Christmas eve truce on the battlefields of World War I.
The two-act production was commissioned by the Minnesota Opera and premiered in November 2012 to national acclaim. With a libretto by Mark Campbell, SILENT NIGHT is sung in French, English, German, Italian and Latin with English subtitles. But don’t let the subtitles keep you from tuning in. As I said, from someone whose not a big opera fan, you won’t be sorry you tuned in or set you DVR for this special holiday program.
SILENT NIGHT airs Friday, December 13 at 9pm with an encore presentation Saturday morning, December 14 at 2am on WOSU TV.
