If you watched MASTERPIECE CLASSIC: SELFRIDGES this past spring then you must watch SECRETS of SELFRIDGES on Sunday. There are two big department stores in London, Harrods and Selfridges. Selfridges was the creation of American entrepreneur Harry Gordon Selfridge, who started with the Marshall Fields Company in Chicago. Bringing the American retail experience to London, Selfridge introduced the idea of luxurious shopping. Making it an event and not a chore, which was a new concept for Londoners. In Harry Selfridge’s drive to put the shopper’s experience above all else he coined the phrase “the customer is always right,” an expression that has become the mantra of retail stores all over the world.
For more than a hundred years after its opening in 1909, Selfridges remains a luxurious shopping experience enjoyed by people from every corner of the world. SECRETS OF SELFRIDGES lets us in on the grandiose store’s hidden stories and gives us a real look at the creative genius of Harry Gordon Selfridge.
