Secrets of Chatsworth

WOSU TV aired a 3 part series on Chatsworth House earlier this year.   SECRETS OF CHATSWORTH is a new documentary focusing more on the history of the family that has inhabited Chatsworth Estate for 500 years.  Chatsworth is the home of the Duke of Devonshire.  I first became aware of the grand home during the film “The Duchess” staring Kiera Knightley and Ralph Fiennes.  For those of you who never saw the movie “The Duchess” is the story of Lady Georgiana Spencer and her ill-fated marriage to the the 5th Duke.  Apparently even though their marriage was a great dynastic match, their personalities were entirely unsuited. Interestingly they lived together with Lady Elizabeth Foster, Georgiana’s close friend and the Duke’s mistress.

Chatsworth even has an American connection. President John F Kennedy’s sister Kathleen was married to Billy Cavendish, son and heir to the 10th Duke of Devonshire. Kathleen Kennedy was killed in a plane crash and is buried on the grounds of Chatsworth.

Chatsworth Estate has been passed down through 16 generations of the Cavendish family and is presently the home of the current 12th Duke of Devonshire and his family.   It’s reported to be the inspiration for Jane Austen’s Pemberley Estate in “Pride and Prejudice”.  This new documentary takes a look behind the doors of the house to find out the real truth behind Chatsworth.

SECRETS OF CHATSWORTH airs Monday, July 15 at 10pm on WOSU TV with an encore presentation on Tuesday, July 16 at 10:30pm on WOSU PLUS.
