Rick Steves Takes Viewers on a Different Journey
On this Friday’s Arts block WOSU TV will feature a special program from Rick Steves. RICK STEVES’ EUROPE: A SYMPHONIC JOURNEY is filled with beautiful music and beautiful video from his travels around Europe.
In this special Rick Steves teams up with the Cascade Symphony Orchestra in Edmonds, Washington and maestro Michael Miropolsky for a musical journey that begins in the United States, and touches down in seven different European countries. Playing musical tour guide, Steves utilizes his extensive knowledge of European history and culture to help set the context for each piece. Then, the orchestra performs a selection of stirring 19th century anthems by Romantic-era composers, including Grieg, Strauss, Wagner and Verdi. Each selection honors a particular nationality, while the finale, Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” (Europe’s official anthem) pays homage to the continent’s motto of “United in Diversity.” What really sets this program apart is each musical selection is accompanied by a montage of evocative video images from the featured country.
RICK STEVES’ EUROPE: A SYMPHONIC JOURNEY airs Friday, May 31 at 9pm on WOSU TV with an encore presentation at 2am on Saturday, June 1.
