Ice Cream, Hot Dogs and Road Trips
As we get ready to celebrate the July 4th holiday next week, WOSU TV’s Sunday Showcase will air some favorite shows celebrating Americana. Every year viewers look forward to their favorite Rick Sebak programs delving into the worlds of hot dogs and ice cream!
We’ll start with the ICE CREAM SHOW, featuring my favorite ice cream Graeters! Sebak travels across the country to celebrate ice cream, the people who make it and the places where you can buy it. His stops include a shop in San Francisco where they specialize in tea-flavored ice cream; a giant-sized cone shop in Panama City; and of course Graeters in Cincinnati. Make sure you have some ice cream in the freezer because you’ll want to grab some after the show.
If sweet stuff’s not your thing stick around for the HOT DOG PROGRAM. The HOT DOG PROGRAM is an all-American celebration of what may be the country’s most popular food. Sebak samples hot dogs from Fairfield, Connecticut, to Los Angeles, California, visiting some of the nation’s coolest hot dog places. The program also considers how and when hot dogs became so popular, and most importantly, surveys the toppings that go on them. Personally my favorite is a ballpark dog smothered in kraut, onions, mustard and relish! The Varsity hot dog is a close second.
Lidia is back to celebrate the 4th with another special, LIDIA CELEBRATES AMERICA: FREEDOM AND INDEPENDENCE. Chef Lidia Bastianich’s new program celebrates independence and freedom with different cultures across America. The celebrity cast includes actress Anna Deavere Smith, opera singer Renee Fleming, singer Martha Wainwright, chef Jacques Pepin.
The afternoon heads down the road with a RIDE ALONG THE LINCOLN HIGHWAY. Celebrating 100 years of providing travel fun for Americans, this program looks at the history, the good food, friendly people and the unexpected charms of America’s first coast-to-coast paved highway. Maybe a family trip along the highway could be a great summer get-away.
Join us for the Sunday Showcase: Celebrating Americana this Sunday afternoon beginning at 3pm. If you can’t catch it live be sure to set you DVR.
