Giuseppe Verdi’s Rigoletto

As beautiful as an opera performance can be it’s not exactly mainstream entertainment. I give GREAT PERFORMANCES kudos for presenting classical opera in a way which is more enjoyable to the casual fan. In September of last year producer Andrea Andermann and director Marco Bellocchio staged a production of Giuseppe Verdi’s Rigoletto. They did it in Mantua, Italy, in the actual places and on the hours of the day as outlined in the libretto. The Sunday Times of London wrote, “What a triumph for the producer and the technical team.”

Great Performances Rigoletto from Mantua airs 8pm, Thursday, July 21 on WOSU PLUS.

In this production tenor Placido Domingo stars in the title role of Rigoletto. He was a bit hesitant at first to take on the baritone role, “When Andrea Andermann invited me to interpret the part of Rigoletto, I replied that there were so many good baritones in the world who could sing it. But Andrea said that he wasn’t looking for a baritone, but rather for the Rigoletto [that I] could bring to life.” And he does as only Placido Domingo can!

For this production the RAI National Symphony Orchestra was conducted by Zubin Mehta. The opera is one of Mehta’s favorites, “It is not only Verdi at the peak of his creativity but also a spectacular theatrical ‘thriller,’” says Mehta.
