Custer’s Last Stand and Inside Nature’s Giants
There is such a wide variety of programs to choose from, personally I don’t know what I would do without my DVR. Honestly, given the price of cable TV with DVR these days I have contemplated dropping the DVR, but then I would have missed either “Hawaii Five-O” or “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” on Monday night because I was watching part two of “Martin Luther” on WOSU. So I grumble every month when I see my cable bill but I keep my DVR and put it to good use.
If you’re like me and plan out your DVR usage or just surf around until you find something that looks good, allow me to call your attention to a couple of programs we’re airing this week that may peak your interest. On Tuesday night “American Experience” presents “Custer’s Last Stand“.   The battle of the Little Bighorn pitted two larger-than-life antagonists against one another: Sitting Bull, the charismatic and politically savvy leader of the Plains Indians, and George Armstrong Custer, one of the Union’s greatest cavalry officers and a man with a reputation for fearless and often reckless courage. When the battle was over, Custer and nearly a third of his army were dead. This program gives us the real George Armstrong Custer, a good solider who, I would argue, was also very impressed with himself. A flaw that in the end would be his undoing.
On Wednesday evening we switch it up and present a nature program with a bit of a twist. “Inside Nature’s Giants” takes us literally inside some of nature’s larger  species. On this first episode a team of scientists dissect a sperm whale to reveal the secrets of this 45-foot deep-sea giant. Okay I will admit it is a bit gross but you can’t stop watching. The team finds a huge number of squid beaks in the whale’s stomach and they are fascinated by the gigantic teeth that have evolved in the lower jaw of the whale.  Over the course of the next several weeks the scientists on “Inside Nature’s Giants“ take a look inside the monster python, the great white shark, tigers and lions. You really shouldn’t miss this fascinating series!
