There cannot be a better way to spend a morning than to talk with someone who has witnessed 99-years of history. Cleo Backus has not only “lived a full life” as she says, but has spent over 65 years of it listening to classical music on WOSU radio!

It’s her love of classical music mentioned in a note to WOSU that led our Dana Viglietta to reach out to Cleo and arrange a meeting with me and her favorite classical music host – Boyce Lancaster.

Looking very fit, Cleo lives in a 1920s home in Grandview and recalled growing up on a farm near the Hoover Dam in Westerville.  The first date with her husband came after they both left military service following World War II.  They had a lengthy drive in the country in an old Plymouth and one thing she clearly remembers about the date was listening to classical music on WOSU AM.

As the music moved to 89.7 and now Classical 101, Cleo has continued to be an avid listener and supporter. She says the music inspires her, but I can speak for Dana and Boyce in saying that she is an inspiration for all of us!

We look forward to your 100th birthday party in October, Cleo.
