On Thursday, March 17th, the House will consider legislation that addresses funding for NPR. This legislation will,
• prohibit direct federal funding of NPR;
• prohibit the use of federal funds provided to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting for payment of dues to NPR or for any external national program provider
This will have dire consequences for public stations like WOSU in Columbus. We require as much flexibility as possible with the community service grants received from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, including paying national fees for programming to NPR, BBC and any other provider. We also should not be prohibited from acquiring or producing programming that would best serve our audience, grow listenership and membership. Such a bill will decrease local news coverage and other important public service programming at local stations.
The New York Times called this bill “the latest example of House Republicans pursuing a longstanding ideological goal in the false name of fiscal prudence.”
