New CSO Director (Far Right) Accepts Baton

The Columbus Symphony Orchestra has a new music director they already call a star — Jean-Marie Zeitouni. He has been called “one of Canada’s brightest young stars” who “brings extraordinary credentials to lead” the CSO. So, today was a day of renewal and excitement and of a great deal of hope that the worst of times are behind the Symphony. That a young Canadian, who loves hockey, will take up residence in Columbus and lead the resurgence of the Columbus Symphony.
Read more about Jean-Marie Zeitouni and listen to excerpts of his charming speech to the crowd at the Southern Theatre today on the blog of WOSU’s Christopher Purdy.

But one cannot help but contrast this day with what’s happening in that city up north about three hours. Members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra are on strike today and the future of the symphony is up for grabs. Last year’s deficit – nearly $4 million.
