Ohio State University is joining other airports across the country in trying to block the closure of an air-traffic control tower because of automatic cuts in federal spending.

The university in Columbus asked a federal court in Washington Monday to stop or delay closing the control tower at Don Scott Field. It’s scheduled to close this month or during the first week in May.

OSU contends that the Federal Aviation Administration violated its own rules by not conducting a study to determine whether closing the towers would be safe for planes and passengers.

Don Scott Field handles more than 70,000 flights a year, with its peak use during Ohio State football weekends and the Memorial Tournament, held in May in nearby Dublin.

The White House says Ohio's schools and defense industry would see reduced funding if automatic cuts to the federal budget take effect this week.

The White House says Ohio’s schools and defense industry would see reduced funding if automatic cuts to the federal budget take effect this week.

The Obama administration says numbers compiled from federal agencies and its own budget office cover only cuts from March to September.

Some states may be able to move money around to deal with the cuts.

The White House says Ohio would lose $25 million for primary and secondary education funding. It also would lose $22 million for education programs for children with disabilities.

It also says about 26,000 civilian defense department employees would be furloughed and that there would be less money for early education services and programs that pay for meals for seniors.

Democratic U.S. Congresswoman Joyce Beatty joined WOSU Wednesday morning for a review of the President's State of the Union address.

President Obama got right to it last night in his State of the Union. The address to Congress pushed for universal preschool, immigration, and as expected, the economy.

“Corporate profits have sky-rocketed to all time highs, and for more than a decade wages and incomes have barely budged. It is our generation’s task, then, to reignite the true engine of America’s economic growth: a rising, thriving middle class.”

And with that, the President layed out his agenda for boosting the middle class…a massive job creation program, calls to Congress to spare entitlements while still pearing the deficit and closing tax loopholes for the rich. WOSU’s Steve Brown spoke with Democratic Congressman Joyce Beatty of Columbus about whether the proposals laid out by Mr. Obama are enough to cut the deficit and avoid sequestration.

Click the play button above to hear their conversation.
