Ohio has been shut-out of the latest round of federal grants for school districts. Three Ohio school districts were among the finalists for Race to the Top grants.
The state will use a pilot program to send grants to organizations that provide legal help, temporary housing, and medical assistance to Ohioans between the ages of 18 and 24.
The Ohio Department of Education was awarded millions of dollars in School Improvement Grant funds to help struggling schools improve academic performance. Hundreds of the state’s lowest performing schools are eligible to apply for a share of more than $100 (M) million dollars in stimulus grants. WOSU reports 60 percent of Columbus City Schools qualify for the program.
A man whose name is well known to two generations of college students died last week. Former Rhode Island Senator Claiborne Pell was the force behind – the Pell Grant program. The program has helped tens of millions of Americans go to college since its start in 1972. WOSU commentator Jerolyn Barbee is thankful for Pell Grants, but says more needs to be done to make college affordable.
Law enforcement agencies around Ohio are expressing deep concern about cuts in the federal budget recently approved by the Appropriations Committee. More specifically, they’re worried about cuts to a grant many agencies say is crucial to battling the drug trade.
