The owner of the SUV that was carrying eight teenagers when it flipped into a pond says the vehicle was stolen.

The owner of an SUV that flipped into a pond with a load of teens in Northeast Ohio says the vehicle had been stolen.

Six teens died in the Sunday morning crash in Warren, while two others managed to escape from the wreckage.

The State Highway Patrol says the SUV’s owner met with police yesterday and filed a theft report, saying it was stolen in the city.

State police earlier had said that no one in the group had permission to take the vehicle.

A report says the driver of the stolen SUV that crashed didn’t have a valid license.

The crash report released Tuesday by the State Highway Patrol also says a teen who survived the crash told a state trooper that it felt like the 19-year-old woman behind the wheel was driving 80 mph.

Another teen who escaped the Sunday morning crash in Warren told a trooper that the driver, Alexis Cayson, sped up just as the SUV rounded what’s known as “Dead Man’s Curve.”

Cayson was among those killed.

Investigators also now say that none of the teens were wearing seat belts.

The dead were 14 to 19 years old.

Investigators have refused to speculate whether drugs or alcohol played a role in one of the deadliest auto accidents in state history.

Investigators are focusing on speeding as a key factor in the crash of a sport utility vehicle carrying eight teenagers, six of them killed when it slammed into a guardrail and flipped over into a swampy pond.

Authorities are citing an unspecified “high rate” of speed, but would not speculate on whether alcohol or drugs were involved in the crash about 7 a.m. Sunday.

The Honda Passport veered off the left side of a road and overturned, coming to a rest upside down in the swamp. It sank with five of the victims trapped inside. A sixth person thrown from the SUV during the crash was found under it.

The patrol identified those killed as Andrique Bennett, 14; Kirklan M. Behner, 15; Daylan Ray, 15; Ramone M. White, 15; Brandon A. Murray, 17; and Alexis Cayson, 19, all of Warren.

Two boys escaped from the submerged vehicle and ran a quarter-mile to a home to call 911.

Family members of the Bellbrook High School students say the teens were coming back from picking up one of their classmates from a party early Sunday. Shortly afterward, the truck left the road and crashed into a tree, killing 14-year old Julianna Hawk, 17-year-old Sophie Kerrigan and 16-year-old Skylar Kooken.

Authorities say a police officer and state trooper were injured when two motorcycles collided Monday afternoon while escorting First Lady Michelle Obama from a campaign stop in Delaware.

The State Highway Patrol says the motorcycles somehow sideswiped each other on State Route 36 east of Delaware as the motorcade headed to an airport. A state trooper and a Genoa Township police officer were hurt in the crash. They were hospitalized in Columbus in stable condition.

The patrol says the police officer’s injuries were more serious than the trooper’s but weren’t life-threatening.

Mrs. Obama was not injured.

Gov. John Kasich and some of his staff were involved in a car crash on a Columbus freeway yesterday. But that’s not the most unusual thing about this story.

Gov. Kasich was coming back from a ceremony in Zanesville in his state-owned SUV, which was being driven by a trooper. The SUV and a car behind it were stopped in traffic on I-71 in downtown Columbus when police say a vehicle rammed the car behind the governor’s SUV, which bashed into it. Kasich was reportedly fine and doesn’t plan to cancel any events, but he’ll be checked out by his doctor just in case. Interestingly, the traffic officer assigned to the crash was familiar to Kasich.

“You ever been stopped by a police officer who was an idiot?”

That would be Officer Robert Barrett, who had pulled Kasich over in 2008 and earned the epithet in a speech to state workers last year. Kasich later apologized. And the vehicle that started that chain reaction that hit the governor, who famously advised supporters once he was elected to get on the bus or get run over by the bus? It was a charter bus.

One lane of Interstate 70 eastbound near Zanesville has re-opened following a fatal crash Wednesday afternoon.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said five people are dead and another person is injured after a car collided head-on with a minivan. The patrol said the car was traveling westbound and crossed the median near milepost 147 in Muskingum County. Central Ohio saw rain this morning, but highway patrol spokesperson Ken Kocab said its unknown if the weather played a role in the crash.

“We haven’t had any reports or indication of what the actual cause of the crash was at this point in time,” Kocab said.

All five passengers in the car died at the scene. The driver of the minivan was taken to Grant Hospital in serious condition. Kocab said the passenger of the minivan appears to be uninjured. The highway patrol is still investigating the accident.

The Pickaway County sheriff's office identified two men late Wednesday afternoon who died in an early morning crash near Rickenbacker Airport.

The plane crashed before 7 a.m. about a mile from Rickenbacker’s main runway. An airport spokeswoman says the aircraft was found intact, and on its top in a field in northern Pickaway county.

The Pickaway County sheriff’s office says the pilot, 58-year-old James A. Babcock of Wooster, and a passenger, 34-year-old Michael B. Bratek of Blasdell, New York, were killed.

The single-engine Cessna was chartered by Columbus-based AirNet Systems. The company, headquartered at Rickenbacker airport, specializes in time-sensitive deliveries.

Airnet spokesman Bob Lentz says the plane was headed for Buffalo, New York carrying bank paperwork and potentially hazardous materials.

“It was primarily canceled checks and then also included express service packages which are generally those that require time-sensitive delivery of high custody and control. Among those was a low-grade radio pharmaceutical,” he said.

Lentz says the Federal Aviation Administration conducted tests on the site and found no contamination from the pharmaceuticals.

Lenz says the company owns 100 planes and employs about 170 pilots, but regularly charters flights through other companies. Bratek, the passenger of the aircraft, was also a pilot who worked for Airnet.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.
