With the August 4th vote on the income tax increase less than three weeks away, the Columbus Metropolitan Club held a debate today on whether the city really needs a rate increase.
An economic advisory panel established by Mayor Coleman a year ago has issued its report on the financial condition of the city’s general fund. The panel says Columbus has no choice but to raise the city income tax.
A 3-judge panel of the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled on Tuesday that the Ohio Supreme Court rather than federal court is the proper forum to decide whether thousands of provisional ballots will be counted. Riding on the outcome of that count is the congressional race in Ohio’s 15th District where Republican Steve Stivers leads Democrat Mary Jo Kilroy by fewer than 600 votes.
With absentee ballots pouring in some county elections boards are pleading for approval to start counting ballots before Election Day. But state officials said Wednesday that Ohio law has no provision to allow the early counting of votes. Here in Franklin County, board of elections officials say they are surprised at the large number of people taking advantage of the new, early voting law. They now predict that one-third of all ballots counted on November 7th will be cast before election day.
