Dublin Schools Back to Normal After Bomb Threat

Two Dublin high schools have returned to normal after a morning bomb threat.

Earlier today school officials delayed the opening of all city schools for two hours to conduct a sweep of the buildings.

Officials notified parents at about 7:15 this morning that schools would be delayed for an unspecified reason.

Police say the schools received the threat this morning but offered no other details.

Earlier this fall, Dublin Coffman and Dublin Jerome high schools were evacuated because of bomb threats. A Jerome student was later charged in connection the threat at that school.

No bombs were found.

OSU Student To Plead Guilty To Bomb Threat

An Ohio State University student is scheduled to plead guilty today to charges of emailing a fake bomb threat that closed several OSU buildings and disrupted much of the campus last year.

The FBI says 24-year-old Jonathan Birkemeyer of Xenia used a stolen computer to email the fake threat last November. Indictments say Birkemeyer told the FBI he found a map detailing the location of nine bombs made from an explosive powder that were hidden in the door jams of the main library and several OSU laboratories.

The threat triggered an alert to tens of thousands of students, staff and faculty and locked down much of the campus, but an intense search of the area didn’t yield any results. The charges carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Former OSU Student Pleads Guilty To Bomb Threat

It could be several months before a former OSU student is sentenced for a bomb threat that closed down part of the university last November. WOSU reports the man pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court Monday.

Twenty-four-year-old Jonathan Birkemeyer admitted to sending the email to the FBI that stated nine bombs were placed in door jams in buildings around the OSU campus, including the Thompson Library and McPherson chemical laboratory.

U.S. District Judge Edmund A. Sargus will sentence Birkemeyer following a pre-sentencing investigation that could take up to 90 days. The maximum sentence is 10 years and a fine up to 250,000 dollars.

U.S. Attorney spokesman Fred Alverson said testimony by one of Birkemeyer’s former professors indicates the student may have been trying to get out of a test.

“The professor said Birkemeyer was having a tough time making the transition from the military to being a full-time college student. Because of the threat the exam was canceled. But it was rescheduled and when Birkemeyer took the rescheduled exam he did not pass it,” Alverson said.

Birkemeyer, a former U.S. Marine, also has been charged with stealing a laptop and a digital listening device. Alverson said those charges could be worked in with the federal sentence.
