95 percent of ancient Ohio was forested. But centuries ago there were also small regions of prairie. Tall grasses and wildflowers were part of the prairie ecology and so were bison. Researchers near Columbus are trying to reestablish a prairie / bison ecosystem.
Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor and four of his teammates can still play in the January 4th Sugar Bowl against Arkansas, but they’ll have to sit out the first five games of the 2011 season for accepting improper benefits. The five buckeyes were suspended Thursday by the NCAA.
The federal Department of Agriculture predicts that farm income will fall 20 percent this year. But such a decline comes after big gains in 2008. And Farm income has been a bright spot during the past six to nine months while other sectors of the economy faltered. In Madison County, west of Columbus, farmers, equipment dealers and bankers prepare for economic uncertainty.
Dr. Michelle Gonzalez has an office in Dublin but she sees patients all over the state. In March, Gonzalez began operating RASCAL, a surgical animal hospital on wheels. Since the first clinic last April, Gonzalez has sterilized about 3,500 cats and dogs. She goes to places where residents don’t make much money or where there’s a shortage of veterinary care.
