Tonight, the City of Columbus begins enforcing its curfew. Last year, about 60 teens were picked up for violating the city's curfew ordinance. This year, there are a few changes. WOSU's Kim Fox reports.

Tonight, the City of Columbus begins enforcing its curfew. Last year, about 60 teens were picked up for violating the city’s curfew ordinance. This year, there are a few changes. WOSU’s Kim Fox reports.

COLEMAN: “As mayor I want our young people to have fun this summer, but most of all I want them to be safe.”

Mayor Michael Coleman views safety as paramount, as it was last year. But with revenues down this year, city officials say they cannot spend $75,000 for an intake at the YMCA. Instead, they are collaborating with Franklin County Children’s Services which already has an intake center.

Enforcement will also be different this year says Coleman, “what we’re doing this year is we’re writing them a ticket and we’re taking them home and then if their parents aren’t home, then we take them to Children’s Services”.

After receiving the summons, teens who violate the city curfew will have to appear in court. Last year, officers took the curfew violators to the YMCA. Coleman says the word spread quickly last summer that the city’s then dormant curfew law would be enforced. He also sees a direct connection between curfew enforcement and a decrease in crimes. “What we noted in last year’s crime statistics is that there was a decrease in aggravated assault during the summer. There was a felony and larceny decrease. There were several areas of decrease of violent crimes in our city.”

The curfew requires children under age 13 to be off the streets one hour after sunset and teens age 13-17 must be in by midnight. A curfew violation is a third degree misdemeanor with a maximum fine of $500 and/or 60 days in jail for the violator.

It will be enforced seven days a week, not just Thursday through Saturday like last year.

The focus will be on the summer months. Though city and county officials have not decided if the partnership will continue after that.

Ohio University has identified another probable case of bacterial meningitis. This in addition to another case that was identified earlier this week.

If this set of cases is confirmed, that will bring the total number of bacterial meningitis cases to four this year for Ohio University. OU Dean of Students Ryan Lombardi says he is concerned about this most recent set of the disease, “it’s certainly a concern of mine that if these two are confirmed that they would be the third and fourth cases, if they were to be so of bacterial meningitis this year.”

Both OU students live on the East Green on campus. They are being treated a hospitals in Columbus.

With the country's current economic slump, seems Americans are in the mood for giving back. Some young American's want to give back through City Year where local applications are up 97% from last year. WOSU's Kim Fox reports.

City Year is a 10-month program for 17-24 year olds that gives them the opportunity to do community service.

For 15 years, City Year Columbus has taken over the front of the state capital for their unity rallies in downtown Columbus. Although the deadline has passed, applications for this Fall’s class were nearly double from last year’s. It seems that there are lots of people interested in making a commitment to the program. That’s the case for City Year corp member David Solomon, “there are certainly challenges. We put in long hours. Fifty hours a week is probably an average and while that’s challenging, I even enjoy that. The hard work”.

In return for the 10-month obligation, City Year Corp members get a living stipend of at least one-hundred and sixty dollars a week. It’s not much but Solomon is unphased by the paltry income. “I think that’s also part of the experience though. You’re kind of on the level of everybody else – the people you’re serving, the people you’re working with kinda balances everything out.”

The educational award is over 47 hundred dollars. It can be used toward a college degree, graduate school as well as existing or future qualified student loans. A school is qualified if it is a Title IV institution of higher education.

Mike Moran is also a corp member. The college tuition benefit drew Mike Moran to the program. But he says the program itself has been an education. “Originally I did it because I didn’t have any money to go to college and City Year gives you an educational award at the end um, but at the end of the first year, I liked it so much and I had such a bond with the children that I worked with that I just wanted to come back and strengthen that bond and give them a consistent role model.”

City Year Corp members have to complete at least 1700 hours of community service along with a few other requirements for the educational award.

Although there are financial incentives for participating in City Year. Some members are just dedicated to serving the community. “I knew before I started, um, about their service aspect. And I was big on service and I wanted to be a part of that. They have a positive kind of outlook towards the community with doing service and helping people out KF: But you could do that on your own? EN: I could, but with a group of people we’re more powerful”.

That was Ericka Nelson. She and other City Year members work with students in the Columbus City Schools and work on other service related projects.

Senior corp member Jennifer Fowler. She moved to Columbus from St. Louis to be a part of City Year. She’s seen a difference in the attitude of the students she works with. “For them to see a group of young adults who are genuinely caring about what it is that they’re learning about and doing and taking an interest in them, to me is rewarding in itself.” Fowler and most corp members, are staunchly proud of the work that they do in the community. But there are other benefits. “City Year’s motto is give a year, change the world’ and I learned at the end of last year, it’s not just about changing the world, it’s about changing yourself.” I’m 22 years old and, so, it just makes me believe, like, that anything is possible and it just gives me that feeling that I’m actually helping the next generation. That’s Deante Weidner. He’s in one of 35 slots that City Year fills annually.

Anthony Geraci is another corp member. He knows that there are many opportunities to help others but he decided that during this recession, his services would be best put to use right here in the U.S. “It will change how you look at the world in such drastic ways that you can always help someone around the corner and you don’t need to go to a third world country to make a difference. You can make a difference around the corner”

Brian Pitzer is reluctant to call himself an inventor. Though his new product, Avitae (uh-VEE-tay), is quite inventive. It’s naturally caffeinated bottled water. WOSU’s Kim Fox recently spoke with Pitzer recently about Avitae and where he got the idea for the product. Pitzer, president and CEO of Dublin-based Vitality Distributing. Avitae is available at all Promo West Concert venues, Hills Market and in some Kroger stores. It should be distributed nationally by the end of the year.

The Ohio Department of Health is encouraging Ohioans to remain viligant as it relates to the swine flu. W-O-S-U's Kim Fox has the story.

The Ohio Department of Health is encouraging Ohioans to remain viligant as it relates to the swine flu.

Ohio has 34 confirmed cases including 12 in Franklin County.

The agency has cut back on testing for the H1N1 virus. The Ohio Department of Health’s Barbara Bradley says they’re just trying to make the best use of their resources, “budgetary concerns certainly come into anything that we do in public health. They are not the exclusive reason that we decided to cut back on testing.”

There have been seven cases related to Ohio State University. According to Bradley, there’s no real explanation for the OSU swine flu cluster, “as we’ve looked at the cases from The Ohio State University, we have not found epidemiological links except two cases were in the same dormitory, but not indicating close contact.”

The most recent cases of swine flu in Franklin County involve an 11-year-old girl and a 13-year-old girl.
