Cincinnati Zoo Remembers Last Passenger Pigeon
The Cincinnati Zoo remembers the last known passenger pigeon with a renovated memorial 100 years after the bird’s death at the zoo.
The zoo also is holding a series of events and lectures in honor of “Martha,” the pigeon that died at the zoo on Sept. 1, 1914.
Monday’s 100-year anniversary observance plans included a media preview of the renovated memorial. The zoo’s executive director says officials hope visitors to the renovated exhibit will become inspired to learn more about what they can do to help species conservation.
One goal of the renovation was to update the building where Martha is believed to have been housed. But zoo officials also want to provide more information about Martha and the protection and conservation work that followed the once-flourishing species’ extinction.
