Artists Compete To Design Ohio’s U.S. Capitol Statue
A commission choosing an artist to design Ohio’s Thomas Edison statue for the U.S. Capitol has narrowed the search down to six semi-finalists.
The Ohio Statuary Hall Commission says the semi-finalists were chosen from 30 applicants. The commission will now choose the finalists who will submit models of their proposed design.
Each state gets to place two statues of notable historic figures in the Capitol. Edison’s statute will join one of former U.S. President James Garfield.
Edison is the inventor of the phonograph, the kinetoscope and the first practical incandescent light bulb. He’ll replace a statue of former Ohio Governor William Allen.
The state of Ohio, the Capitol architect and the Joint Committee on the Library of Congress must approve the final artist selection.
