Governor John Kasich is fighting a subpoena in the trial of Benjamin Suarez, a northeast Ohio businessman charged with illegally funneling money to the campaign of some Ohio Republicans.

“I may have had a meeting with him long ago, but I’m not involved in this in any way,” Kasich said Tuesday.

Suarez was a long-time fixture among Ohio Republicans. He’s charged with illegally sending money to the failed Senate campaign of Josh Mandel and the campaign of Congressman James Renacci.

Both returned the money.

Defense attorneys for Suarez have said he never willfully violated campaign finance laws.
