Governor Signs Bill Pausing Renewable-Energy Goals
Gov. John Kasich has signed into law a bill delaying the phase-in of Ohio’s renewable energy targets for two years.
The law puts on hold implementation of goals set in 2008 for the use of renewable and advanced energy by Ohio utilities and creates a 12-member study committee.
Backers of the targets say forcing utilities to use more renewable energy such as wind and solar helps the environment and creates jobs and helps reduce dependence on fossil fuels, such as coal.
Opponents in the Republican-led Legislature say the goals are driving up electricity costs by imposing costly government mandates on utility companies.
Ohio’s 2008 law requires utilities to generate a combined 25 percent of their energy from renewable or advanced energy sources by 2025.
