Authorities say a home invasion suspect who shot himself in the head after holding a SWAT team at bay in Columbus for more than two hours has died.

Columbus Police say the 44-year-old was pronounced dead at Grant Hospital at 7:28 p.m. after shooting himself Sunday afternoon. Police say the man held a SWAT team at bay while holding a gun and standing near a pond on the city’s east side from 11:15 a.m. to around 2 p.m.

Columbus Police spokesman Sgt. Rich Weiner says the man dropped the gun, but then lunged for it, leading police to shoot him in the leg. He then grabbed the gun and shot himself in the head.

Police say the man was a suspect in a home invasion and burglary in a home in Obetz.
