Prosecutors in Marion County have charged six students with vandalism for allegedly taking a chain saw to two dozen trees outside the school as a senior prank.

The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office said Monday that three of the River Valley High School students were charged with one count each of felony vandalism. Three others were charged with complicity to commit vandalism, also a felony.

Principal Paul Coleman said the students also will face disciplinary action at school, but he didn’t provide details.

Students and administrators arriving at school last Thursday found the 25 trees chopped off at their bases. The district says clearing the felled trees and replacing them will cost thousands.

About 500 students attend the school in Caledonia, about 50 miles north of Columbus.

Forestry grad- I am sure these young men have no idea how much work it takes and how long it takes to grow even a 2 inch diameter (trunk) tree. those 25 trees must have a nursery value of at least $100 each. Plus 50% more to plant.
I think their punishment should include 1. preparation of the site for replanting including removal of stumps and debris.2.purchase of 25 quality nursery stock trees at 1″ diameter, 3. dig holes according to nursery specifications, 4 purchase and use soil amendments as required for good growth, 5 plant trees and stake as needed, Provide water for the rest of this Summer and Summer of 20015 to insure survival. Replace any trees that don’t survive. I think they will learn a lot by this process and learn to respect other peoples property. Sincerely, Joe W.

“Prank” is not an acronym for vandalism ,
